For the Internet to work well a lot of software
is needed. MS-DOS won't do. Setting up an online store sounds
easy but it is not. Corporate websites are boring but the money
paid to build them is not. You will also need the right services.
Not all web pages can be built by students-- especially if you
need transaction functionality. Microsoft is not yet dominant in
the Internet software space -- many other companies offer great
software solutions to get the most out of the Web. Don't be
distracted by all the free open source software stories.
Companies that can deliver the right software are paid well for
it.
WHY INVEST?
Every company that wants to be taken seriously
now has a Web strategy. They also want to do business over the
Web because everybody else is doing it. Since you don't want to
fall behind you invest in software and services. And you pay for
it. The nice thing with software is that you build it once and
sell it numerous times. Ask Bill Gates. Everybody can build a
homepage in one day. Look at our site. But building Dell's
homepage takes a lot more.
