CDnow
CDNow, Inc. Nasdaq: CDNW Branch: Internet Shops & Markets

Profile:
CDNow is the biggest and one of the first Internet retailers specializing in CDs, cassettes, videos, T-shirts, and DVD's. CDNow has a well-known brand name. CDNow merged in March 1999 with N2K, Inc (formerly NTKI). N2K was known by its domain name www.musicboulevard.com. This merger was necessary because of the fierce competition in this market, especially after Amazon joined the fray. CDNow will soon be undergoing some changes because they have agreed to be bought by Columbia House, the club membership joint venture between music and movie giants Sony and Time Warner.

Management:
CEO-founders and twins Jason and Matthew Olim still own about 20% of CDNow. Jason has a degree in computer science and worked before 1994 as a software engineer. We don't know what their position will be after the sell-out, but we don't feel sorry for them. If you really want to know more just buy their book The CDnow Story at their biggest competitor... Amazon.

Started: February 1994
IPO: February 1998

Cool !

Not so cool...

  • The 1st big online music site
  • Their brand and domain name excludes the selling of other articles. That's why we think Amazon is so much cooler.
  • Didn't react right on new developments like MP3

Propus personal view:
CDNow has to maintain its position in a market with heavy competition and with big names like Amazon. Their fusion with Columbia House is the only way to survive this by using economies of scale.
