What is the Internet? Just a bunch of networks tied together. But the traffic that goes over the Web consists of little packages of data that all follow their own routes. At the receiver's computer they are tied together again. In the mean time they travel through numerous servers, switches and routers. Not to mention wires and cables. Especially switches -- very clever systems with a lot of software in them and they are pretty expensive. Companies that make this equipment work with specialist people that cannot be replaced easily.
WHY INVEST?
A lot more equipment is needed. Bandwidth is still scarce and around the world companies are investing in building out networks and therefore the Internet. Cisco is the biggest in this space but they cannot concentrate on everything. Smaller companies with smart products are finding their own place in this huge market. You can invest in them before Cisco buys them out.
