INTERNET CONTENT & COMMUNITIES

BRANCH PROFILE

In some languages content means that you are satisfied. In Internetland content refers to the information you get on a site. This information can be financial info, news, weather-- basically anything that means something to somebody. Portals have to offer general content because they try to reach a broad audience. Specialized content can be found on special content sites like Marketwatch for financial info. A special category is homemade content. You can find this on community sites like Tripod, where people can build their own homepages. Some people think it is necessary to put a picture of their pet on the Web. We don't. Others try to explain the sense and nonsense of investing in Internet companies. Yes, that's us.

WHY INVEST?

The content providers usually earn their money through advertising. Special sites like iVillage target women and are getting paid more by advertisers because advertisers think they can sell more baby powder at iVillage than at Tripod. Makes sense. The big media companies already have huge amounts of content that they can put online. It becomes even better with broadband access because then content can be delivered through sound and moving images. For highly specialized content companies ask subscription fees. We don't because we have too much competition and nobody would pay anyway for our content. So enjoy it while it's there.
